Otherwise known as rum cherry or mountain black cherry, the black cherry (Prunus serotina) is very popular for its sweet and tart flavor. This cherry is a stalked, globular fruit, with a single hardy seed.
Black cherry trees are native to the eastern regions of North America. Even today, this tree is abundantly seen in these regions. It was the European settlers, who started using the bark of this tree for its medicinal properties.
It is said that, the Native Americans have been using the roots, fruits and twigs of this tree; for treating various conditions, like respiratory problems, cold and diarrhea. While some people used the infusion made of black cherry bark to treat jaundice, even the root bark tea was used for treating conditions, like hemorrhoids.

Apart from its medicinal uses, black cherry is also used for culinary purposes. These fruits are used for making jam and pies, and are also added to ice creams, cocktails, sodas, etc.

After that period, they suffered lesser degree of muscle damage, as compared to their counterparts. So, it has been suggested that, black cherry juice prevents muscle damage that can be caused by exercises.
