Antimicrobial Abilities

Cardamom seeds are linked to a host of benefits, and one of these benefits includes its antimicrobial abilities. The oil in the cardamom seeds is known for killing fungi and bacteria.
In a study conducted on cardamom essential oil, it was discovered that the oil was highly effective when it came to killing various types of fungi and bacteria. The researchers involved in this study suggested that the antibacterial activity of the oil might have to do with its abilities to cause damages to the cell membranes of specific types of bacteria.
In another study, it was proven that the essential oil of cardamom displayed antimicrobial activity against just about every test microorganism. While in another study it was concluded that the oil could become an important component in the latest antimicrobial drugs.
It is not advisable to ingest cardamom essential oil, and it is also recommended to consult with your doctor before you start trying out any type of herbal remedy. Certain products can cause side-effects or interact with any medication that you are currently using. It is, however, possible to use cardamom to your cooking, add cardamom for an autumn flavor.

Diabetes And Metabolic Syndrome

Certain research has suggested that cardamom might assist with certain aspects associated with metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome involves a set of different heart conditions which can result in type 2 diabetes and heart disease. This can include:
  • High blood sugar
  • High cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • High triglycerides
  • Hypertension
  • “Good” cholesterol levels that are low
In a study conducted on animals, rats were fed a diet that was high in fat and carbohydrates. The rodents that ingested cardamom powder came back with better cholesterol and lower weight when compared to the rats that were not given the supplement.
In one of the double-blind trials, it was discovered that cardamom may be responsible for improving certain biomarkers which cause disease and inflammation.
The researchers used women candidates that were either obese or overweight. These test subjects also had high cholesterol and prediabetes. The findings of the study discovered that the women that consumed cardamom over a period of 8 weeks had levels that were lower of inflammatory proteins, C-reactive protein, along with other types of markers.
In other research, 83 people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were given either a placebo or green cardamom. The group that was given the cardamom experienced health benefits which included improved insulin levels and haemoglobin A1c, after a time-frame of 10 weeks.
