Healthy Organic Jicama Fries
Jicama is a root vegetable, used in a wide range of food recipes. Crunchy and mild sweet in taste, it is rich in vitamin C, dietary fiber, and potassium. Another health benefit of this food is that it contains low calories and negligible amounts of cholesterol, saturated fats, and sodium. Thus, it is a perfect food item for ensuring good health. What's more, it grows almost all the year round. In short, you do not have to wait for winter or peak seasons to enjoy the nutty flavored root.
The most popular recipes are jicama fries and salads. Preparation requires peeling the outer brownish colored skin along with the tough fibrous layer, just below the skin layer. For making a jicama salad, simply cut this root vegetable into wedges, sprinkle fresh lemon juice and a dash of cayenne pepper. Serve it with yogurt dip on the side. Coming to jicama fries, you can try several recipes, ranging from raw cooking to baked frying.
Raw Jicama Fries Recipe
  • 1 large (2 pounds) jicama
  • 1 tablespoon, olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon, paprika
  • 1 teaspoon, onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon, red chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon, salt
Directions for Preparation
This is probably the simplest fries recipe that you can prepare within a few minutes time. Peel and wash jicama properly. Cut it into nearly equal thin strips. Take a large bowl and add all the ingredients - jicama strips, olive oil, paprika, onion powder, chili powder, and salt. Toss till you get a well-blended mixture. Transfer into serving platters and enjoy. You can also serve these healthy fries after sprinkling with lime juice.
Crispy Jicama Fries Recipe
  • 3 cups, vegetable oil (quantity depends on pot size)
  • 1 medium-sized jicama
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Paprika
  • Salt and pepper as per taste
Directions for Preparation
Cut thin slices out of this root vegetable, in the same way as you do for making potato chips. Stack a few slices one above the other and cut them into matchstick size pieces. Likewise, continue cutting all the slices. Once you are done with this, turn on the gas burner and preheat a heavy pot. Pour the vegetable oil till it reaches to 1-inch level. Heat the oil to a temperature of about 350 °F; you can use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature of the oil.
Place the chips into the hot oil and cook till they turn crispy. For turning purpose, use a slotted spoon. A few minutes of cooking is sufficient for scrumptious fries. Cook them in batches and drain excess oil by using a tissue paper. Season with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Toss for even coating and serve hot.
